![]() so my quest continues but I'm very very pleased with this current one. And so I settled for one of their latest generation SACD players but not the top of the line, rather the first in their line up, simply because the top of the Eso line is ever changing. I initiated interest but after I had a lengthy and honest discussion with the Eso import for Aus, just then I realised how far out-dated these units were. It was separate transport and Dac, top of the line but more than 10yrs old. Then I came across the mothership! A huge affair- the Esoteric P03 & D03 combination. When I was looking for an all out assault to upgrade my digital front from my previous Mac, I researched far and wide. Heck, digital is progressing so fast, by the time you buy it and bring it home, technically speaking it's already outdated! If you really wanted to upgrade the digital front with latest tech and all the benefits from digital filters, upsampling settings, output settings and intricate performance from top Dac chip sets, the latest versions are far superior, without a doubt! No matter what the model or how special the sound, no where near your Rega gear in terns of vfm. Just my two cents so take it for what it's worth. And let's not even get into the fact that DAC's today are worlds beyond was was offered 20 or 30 years ago. All things being equal, you could probably pick up an Oppo BDP-103 for a few hundred bucks and it would serve as an excellent transport which you could couple with a higher end DAC. I probably wouldn't even consider a transport that couldn't play SACD (unless it was a backup player or something to that nature). Modern CD players/transports have significantly improved in the last 20 years. I will also add that you probably should not be considering dropping top dollar for a CD player from the 80's or even 90's unless there is truly something special about the unit. Is it because they have bias against RCA's which I have not found in my experience? Or is there something inherently wrong with the RCA outputs that is harming sound quality? So I always question why reviews are saying use balanced. I've never found that RCA plugs are worse than balanced in regular connection length runs. ![]()
