It’s a great option and MAMP Pro, the paid version, will provide most of the features you need to run multiple web sites on your machine. MAMP is a package that will install MySQL, PHP, and Apache on your Mac all with one download, and a quick install. These are the exact steps I used to get things running on my machine, and it’s been tested on many machines.
